We are excited for From Decibel to Downbeat: The Process of Sound Design with Brady Varwig! This digital workshop will take place via Zoom on Thursday, October 29th at 6:00PM CST. Come sit with Brady and join us to learn about the sound design process, differences for sound between musicals and a play, how to use sound effects, and how to properly use microphones.

ABOUT BRADY:

Brady has been part of Corn Stock for the past few years off and on, but has more recently become their Sound Chair. Brady loves to run sound and lighting and has been part of hundreds of events as the sound technician. He also is the owner of Varwig Studios and travels around the United States running sound for corporate events.

We are excited for It's Lit: Lighting Design with Aja M. Jackson from Boston, MA! This digital workshop will take place via Zoom on Wednesday, November 11th from 6:00PM - 7:30PM CST. Come sit with Aja to hear how she got her start in lighting design, what goes into light design, and how collaboration is key. ABOUT AJA M. JACKSON:

Aja is a Boston-based lighting designer working in theater, opera, dance, corporate events, and interdisciplinary immersive performances. Aja is an alumni from the Johnny Carson School of Theater and Film (UNL), she graduated with a BFA in Theatrical Design and BA in Dance Performance, later receiving her MFA in Lighting Design from Boston University.

Aja has designed for companies such as the American Repertory Theatre, The Public Theater's Under the Radar Festival, Yeager Design, New Repertory Theatre, Actors Shakespeare Project, Hibernian Hall, Central Square Theater, Lyric Stage, and the Boston Conservatory Opera.

Aja is Resident Lighting Designer and core collaborator for interdisciplinary, site-specific movement company, Nourishment (www.thisisnourishment.com). Aja is currently on the faculty at the National Theater Institute teaching Lighting Design with Directors and Practical Lighting Design.

She has also worked in production management with companies such as The Santa Fe Opera, Boston Lyric Opera, Lyric Stage Company of Boston, and the Denver Center for the Performing Arts. IG: @ajamjackson

Come sit with John Stuff, originally from Champaign, IL, to talk about core skills to succeed in administration, how to transition from onstage actor to artistic administrator, and how to build skills in a community theatre setting to be a successful administrator.

ABOUT JOHN STUFF:

Art and theater have been my passions since childhood. When deciding on a college path, I decided it would be easier to make a career in art than theater (starving artist or starving actor?) and received my BFA degree in Graphic Design. I worked for the University of Illinois as a graphic designer for 13 years while keeping theater as a hobby, directing the musicals at my high school for 13 years.

In 1990 there was talk of tearing down or gutting the Virginia Theater in Champaign, IL so a group of theater friends started the Champaign Urbana Theater Company to try to help save the Virginia. Several years later, we were able to get it into the hands of the Champaign Park District who still owns it and has completed a multi-million dollar restoration of the building. Mission accomplished.

While all this was happening, I was also freelancing and started my own design studio, Pen & Inc Graphic Design. I left the U of I to make Pen & Inc my full time job and also took on the role of Manager of CUTC. The two meshed well as I ended up doing a lot of the set designs/set painting and creating the marketing pieces for CUTC through Pen & Inc. As theater started monopolizing more and more of my time, I decided to break with all of it and moved to Dubuque, IA to take over the Executive Director position at the Grand Opera House. It turned out to be a poor decision and only lasted two years.

While looking for guest directing jobs, I went to Monroe, LA to direct a show and had such a great time I looked for more opportunities like it. In 2017 I saw a post they were accepting applications for the Executive Director position at the Depot Theater in Dodge City, KS. That position lasted just over 3 years until the Board decided to run the entire operation with volunteers. I am now the Supervisor of Promotions at the Boot Hill Casino and Resort in Dodge City, KS.
